Dog Island is located 3.5 miles offshore of Carrabelle, Florida in Franklin County. It's right off the Gulf coast and partly shelters Apalachicola Bay and St. George Sound. Dog Island is one of many barrier islands located off Florida's southern panhandle offshore from where the Crooked River and the Carrabelle River merge, then into St. George Sound. Nearby islands include Cape St. George Island, St. George Island, and St. Vincent Island. Dog Island is a relatively small island at only 6.8 miles in length. It can be accessed by plane, ferry or boat. Small portions of the island are privately owned, as is the case with many islands, but most of it is owned by the Nature Conversancy, an organization devoted to preserving natural communities that represent the diversity of life on Earth. Some people call it "the island that time forgot" because it's almost entirely untouched, save for the few houses built on the few private properties. Ferries are available for most hours of the day to get travelers back and forth, on and off the island when they need it.
It's believed that humans were present on the island from 8,000 years ago onward. The name Dog Island refers to the fact that the French rediscovered it in 1536 and found wild dogs on it, the island itself is shaped almost like a crouching dog and because certain types of canoes - known as dogs - were stored there.
Dog Island isn't a place that gets much exposure or traffic. As a result, it's one of the few relatively untouched places in the world. The island itself is breathtaking, a testament to the natural beauty of the earth.
